Why Tagging the Team is so Important

This blog post was published by Sunlight Social, a social media marketing business I work for.

If you’ve ever been to any sort of local event, whether it’s a concert, fashion show, expo, farmer’s market, etc. you may have noticed that the people working there all have business cards or social media handles available to the customers there. Although I’ve been guilty of walking past these without a second thought, they are so crucial for the same reason that tagging people on social media is: connecting and marketing!

My first experience with this was when I attended Tempe Fashion Week in October 2021. Walking into the bustling backstage area with no fashion show or in-person interview experiences under my belt, I felt intimidated to say the least. Despite feeling out of place, my fashion journalism club, The Chic, got at it and we collectively did at least 15 interviews with the different people involved, ranging from designers and stylists to hair and makeup artists. I felt so accomplished and proud of my team that night for all our effort and for an overall amazing fashion show experience!

The downside to this and all of the other Tempe Fashion Week events that we attended was that we virtually didn’t know anyone; so everything we were posting, we weren’t tagging anyone. And to take it a step further, any stories we wrote and published on our digital publication may not have even reached those interviewees due to not knowing their social media handles (at the time- We’ve luckily found everyone since then haha). When posting videos of the show itself, I was only able to tag a few designers by randomly finding their handles, but there are so many more people that deserved to be tagged for credit in creating the production!

Since joining the Luxe & City team and becoming a Social Media Manager for Sunlight Social, I have learned so much about marketing and of course… the beloved social media of choice for most of us, Instagram. Part of my role with Luxe & City consists of planning, coordinating, setting up, hosting and tearing down major fashion events. While most events are on a more local level to Arizona, with the growth of this creative agency, some upcoming events are national or even on a global scale and that makes tagging the team that much more important! Fashion events in my experience typically involve:

With all of these different people involved from different industries, it’s important to tag who’s involved to give everyone the credit they deserve for their part in the event or project! One of your followers may be on the search for a hair artist and when they see that for example, Vincent may have done someone’s hair for a photoshoot, now they know who to reach out to! Posting and tagging the team also helps you in the long-run as well because those people tagged may see you as a potential business partner or connection to keep in touch with in the future.

It’s also worth noting that when you’re part of the team, being tagged feels rewarding and it subconsciously keeps your name and business in the back of people’s minds. Repetition is a key concept in marketing and now for social media in that same regard! The more tags you have, the more reach and engagement your page can gain. Not to mention, you build major hype around you and your brand when you’re able to repost tons of cool content with your name on it ;)

One of the more sentimental benefits to tagging everyone involved is community. If you are able to network in person with people at an event and then later tag them in posts online (or even be bold and DM them!) then you can potentially create a community around you and begin to have a home base of like-minded people. And this works vice versa as well! Say you find a photographer you really love online, if you begin supporting them by engaging, reposting their work and messaging them about your interests, meeting up in person suddenly doesn’t seem so scary because you have a relationship already!

We understand that not everyone loves social media or even consistently uses their accounts, but these virtual public squares are becoming more and more important. Now is the time to learn and connect with new people to further you and your career.

Long story short: Tag the team. If you don’t know the team, find out! I promise it’ll be a win-win for everyone involved, including you!
